Risk Assessment Overview

Aeolus is a leader in human health risk assessment.   It's founder and President, Dr. D. Wayne Berman, was in the group at the original Clement Associates that pioneered the procedures for conducting risk assessments in response to promulgation of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA), under which the Superfund Program was established.   These procedures remain in general use today.

In keeping with our philosophy of matching the level of sophistication of an analysis to the specific needs of a project, Aeolus offers a full array of tools for assessing risk, from the simplest (Tier 1) Risk-Based Corrective Action (RBCA) and similar types of analyses to full-blown assessments incorporating detailed evaluations of chemical fate and transport that support sophisticated exposure assessments, which can be used to minimize decision errors.  When appropriate, the former can be conducted quickly and cheaply.  However, when millions of dollars are at stake and people may be at risk, it is important to get the science right so that both the chance of falsely declaring a situation safe and falsely concluding that mitigation is required can be minimized.

Aeolus has conducted or managed risk assessments for literally hundreds of facilities and sites around the country involving a broad range of hazardous materials (including volatile organic chemicals, petroleum products, PCBs, dioxins and furans, pesticides, radionuclides, and a variety of metals and other inorganic agents).
