Aeolus has been at the forefront in development of a set of mutually consistent methods for determination of asbestos in various environmental media and a new, companion protocol for assessing asbestos-related risks.
The methods are unique because they provide results that can be used to support exposure and risk assessment. In contrast, few of the traditional methods for determining asbestos concentrations can be used for this purpose.
The new risk-assessment protocol developed by Aeolus was considered in an EPA-sponsored peer-review consultation in February, 2002. The expert panel generally endorsed the overall approach and recommended additional research to refine some of the details. The current version of the protocol has recently been refined and submitted to the EPA for further consideration while the additional research is completed. The protocol, supporting documentation, and the comments of the peer-review panel are available on this website.
Aeolus has also been applying these new tools to conduct quantitative risk assessments at a variety of sites around the country.
